Brand Finance latest report focusing on the most valuable brands around the world in 2023. The team at Tradingpedia collected data from BrandFinance and created a map showing the biggest brands in terms of monetary value in 45 different countries. We also found out that in 2023, Facebook lost 42% of its brand value from last year and is currently estimated at $58.97 billion. At the same time, Meta’s other hugely popular brand, Instagram, increased by 42% to an estimated value of $47.44 billion.

In 2022, Facebook was the most valuable social media brand, estimated at $101.2 billion by the BrandFinance folks. Shortly after the rebranding to Meta, however, the company reported a decline in profits; its shares fell and as a result, roughly $230 billion of value from Meta’s market capitalization was eliminated. In 2023, the brand was estimated to have a monetary value of $58.97 billion, down $42.2 billion or 41.7%.

While Meta shifted its focus to developing the «metaverse», its subsidiary Instagram continues to grow; in December 2021, it announced it had reached 2 billion monthly active users, making it the third-largest social media platform after Facebook (3.03 billion MAUs) and YouTube (2.5 billion MAUs). Currently, WhatsApp is estimated to have around 2 billion monthly active users, as well. According to the estimations made by BrandFinance, Instagram now has the world’s sixth most valuable media brand – in 2023, its value increased from 2022 by nearly $14 billion (41.68%) to $47.44 billion.

But what is a brand value exactly? If companies had to license their brands as if they did not own them, what would they need to pay? This is the value analysts at Brand Finance calculate each year for their Top 500 Global Brands and publish on the Brandirectory website. And this is the brand database we used to arrive at these conclusions. Note that we made all calculations based on the monetary value of the brands in U.S. dollars; the values shown in various national currencies or Euro on the Brandirectory website are converted from U.S. dollars.
