NATOs generalsekretær Mark Rutte taler på The Warsaw School of Economics
NATOs generalsekretær Mark Rutte besøkte Warszawa onsdag (26. mars 2025), hvor han møtte Polens president Andrzej Duda, statsminister Donald Tusk, visestatsminister og forsvarsminister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz og utenriksminister Radosław Sikorski. Generalsekretæren holdt deretter en tale ved et offentlig arrangement arrangert av Warszawa School of Economics og det polske instituttet for internasjonale anliggender.
Lederskap i Alliansen
Generalsekretær Rutte berømmet Polen for sitt lederskap innenfor Alliansen, inkludert dets sterke støtte til Ukraina og rekordhøye forsvarsutgifter, som skal nå 4,7 % av BNP i år. "Polens investering i forsvar er et eksempel for alle allierte. Ikke bare topper du NATO-listene, du planlegger å bruke enda mer," sa han.
I sin hovedtale understreket generalsekretæren styrken til det transatlantiske båndet og la ut NATOs vei til det kommende toppmøtet i Haag.
"Når det gjelder å holde Europa og Nord-Amerika trygt, er det ikke noe alternativ til NATO," sa han og understreket at det ikke er mulig å forestille seg forsvaret av Europa uten Alliansen.
Etter hvert som Russlands krig mot Ukraina raser og dets militære samarbeid med Kina, Iran og Nord-Korea intensiveres, advarte Rutte at president Putin «ikke har gitt opp ambisjonen om å omforme den globale sikkerhetsordenen». Han understreket at en sterk transatlantisk allianse fortsatt er grunnlaget for europeisk sikkerhet og at sterkere europeiske allierte er en unik strategisk ressurs for USA – som lar Amerika, sa han, «fremme fred gjennom styrke på den globale scenen».
Trump wants a strong NATO
“When it comes to keeping Europe and North America safe, there is no alternative to NATO,” he said, stressing that it is not possible to imagine the defence of Europe without the Alliance.
As Russia’s war against Ukraine rages on and its military cooperation with China, Iran, and North Korea intensifies, Mr Rutte warned that President Putin “has not given up on his ambition to reshape the global security order.” He underlined that a strong transatlantic Alliance remains the foundation of European security and that stronger European Allies are a unique strategic asset to the United States - allowing America, he said, to “promote peace through strength on the global stage.”
Secretary General Rutte reiterated his confidence in the United States’ continued commitment to NATO and Article 5. “Listen to President Trump, who has repeatedly stated his commitment to a strong NATO. Listen to the strong bipartisan support in the US Congress,” he said. “And listen to the American people,” three-quarters of whom support NATO according to a recent Gallup poll.
Mr Rutte also emphasised that the US commitment to NATO comes with a clear expectation: that European Allies and Canada take on greater responsibility for our shared security.
Looking ahead to the NATO Summit in The Hague, the Secretary General said the Alliance would “begin a new chapter for our transatlantic Alliance. Where we build a stronger, fairer and more lethal NATO, to face a more dangerous world.”
