STOCKHOLM, June 12 (Reuters) – The annual Bilderberg Meeting kicks off in Sweden on Thursday, providing a private forum for discussion at a time when President Donald Trump has upended security and economic ties between the U.S. and Europe.
The high-level networking event was formed in 1954 to foster dialogue between the U.S. and Europe. It does not invite media and delegates rarely speak about what has been discussed, triggering numerous conspiracy theories about their aims.
NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Christopher Donahue, Commander of the U.S. Army Europe and Africa are among those on this year’s delegate list, published by the organisers just ahead of the meeting.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will give a speech «on Sweden’s and the EU’s competitiveness and Sweden’s support for Ukraine,» his spokesperson told Reuters.
Transatlantic relations top the agenda, with Ukraine, critical raw materials and AI also on the list, the organisers who also publish the names of the participants, said.
Other than that, information is scarce. The organisers say the secrecy is to allow participants to be able to speak freely in an environment of trust.»There is no desired outcome, there is no closing statement, there are no resolutions proposed or votes taken, and the Meeting does not support any political party or viewpoint,» the official website says.
How much impact groups like Bilderberg actually have is hard to judge, according to Christina Garsten, professor at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, who studies transnational think tanks.
They aim to shape the broad political and corporate agenda. But if they are seen as having too much influence, they can be accused of being anti-democratic.
«It’s there that conspiracy theories can flower,» she said.

Thank you for your coverage of Bilderberg conference, which will soon begin in Stockholm.
I conducted PhD research on Bilderberg, so please, let me offer you summary of my most concerning findings that I published in US peer-reviewed journal (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1057/s41311-023-00477-1).
I found that since 2019, EU, NATO, IMF, and UN have been chaired by people who attended Bilderberg conference(s) prior to their appointment. In EU, Bilderbergers also occupy other top positions like those of the head of the European Council, European Central Bank and Eurogroup. „Von der Leyen and Charles Michel attended the same Bilderberg conference in 2015 and subsequently in the same year 2019 they both gained highest positions in EU,» my study observes.
NATO is also striking: „All post-Cold War general secretaries of NATO participated at some Bilderberg conference prior to their appointment (…) Both Wörner and Solana had their Bilderberg première in 1985,» the study emphasizes.
French president Emmanuel Macron is also Bilderberger, and he became key minister when Bilderberger Manuel Valls was Prime Minister. And the day after Macron reached the position of president, another Bilderberger – Édouard Philippe – became new Prime Minister. Moreover, Macron’s candidate, Bilderberger Georgieva, leads IMF thanks to sudden change of selection rules…
Bill Clinton was invited to Bilderberg in 1991. Two years later he became US president, also due to help from member of Bilderberg Group steering committee Vernon Jordan. And in 1995 Clinton administration installed Bilderberger James Wolfensohn into World Bank.

In recent interview with another US academic journal, I outlined how Bilderberg contributed to the creation of euro: «One of the architects of the Euro, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, served on Bilderberg´s steering committee. Before their appointments, every president of the European Central Bank attended at least one Bilderberg conference. The first ECB president, Wim Duisenberg, belonged to Bilderberg´s steering committee and served as the network´s honorary treasurer.
